yuccaВчера дул жуткий ветер, как это тут принято. Главное наше здание на горке закрылось в три часа по причине проблем с электричеством. Починили только сегодня утром.
Сегодня все получили вот такой мэйл от начальника security:
I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried. From the first chapter of Ripley’s Believe It or Not, we've had another power outage. This time it was at the Foothills campus involving FL-1, 2,3 and 4. Not to be outdone by yesterday's outage, a small grass fire behind FL-2 accompanied the most recent outage.

Now as to the cause of the Foothills fire and power outage. Purportedly a low flying “tow plane” was landing at the Boulder airport. That would have been just fine if the plane had retracted its “ tow line”, but apparently that wasn't to be the case. Instead, the plane, with its protruding and ever dangling towline, crossed over some power lines. The towline became entangled with the power line and something had to give…and it did…the power line “snapped” and fell to the earth.
As the power line descended towards earth it encountered some wire fencing. The power line “energized” the wire fencing causing the fence to “arc” several hundred yards downstream of the snapped power line. The arc initiated a small grass fire, which was noticed by some alert NCAR staff and they immediately subdued the fire.
I kid you not this is what really happened! All power has been restored, the fire has been put out and we are again open for business as usual. I hope this is the last email I have to send out for awhile and I am sure you are hoping for the same.

Ps: And there is no truth to the rumors that I was the pilot of the plane…I can be blamed for a lot but not that…

Update: Теперь говорят, что это не самолет, а какая-то птица устроила пожар, а самолет просто мимо пролетал.
