To the Parks and Recreation Department of the city of Boulder:
Hello,
I was wondering about the geese at Viele lake. Do you know if they'll stay the whole summer or continue their way north? Do you have any plans of limiting the population or enticing them to change their migration patterns? They are nice to watch, but the whole park is dirty now and I cannot take my toddler there any more. This is unfortunate because this nice park was one of the reasons we chose to buy a house in South Boulder last year. Or am I alone in not wishing to bring my son home covered by birds' poop? Thanks for your answer.

Hi Julia,
My name is Lisa Green, and I am the Park supervisor in charge of the maintenance of Veile Lake/Harlow Platts Park. I recently attended a Wildfowl seminar put on by the Division of Wildlife and the recently set up Metro/Front Range Waterfowl Mangement Task Force to learn more about the possibility of controlling geese popuations on the Front range of Colorado. My first priority here in Boulder is Harlow Platts Park.

What I learned at this seminar isn't very hopeful, as the geese populations in the entire US and now the Front Range of Colorado have exploded. One of the best ways to control the population is hunting, but now we have what they are calling "resident" geese that don't migrate as the others do. These geese like to stay in populated areas near water and food sources (Veile Lake for example), and obviously hunting within any city limits isn't feasible. A method of controlling local populations is oiling eggs to prevent the egg from hatching. This seems like a reasonable way to prevent further population growth, but does not decrease the immidiate population. We would need to get State permits to do this and I am pursuing this option through our City of Boulder IPM Coordinator to see if this would be possible in the city limits. We, in the city of Boulder, have ordinances in place to prevent harassment or killing of birds: we are a bird sanctuary. This fact may hinder us from oiling eggs.

The individual in charge of maintenance at Harlow Platts is committed to keeping the sidewalks as clear as possible and has been putting a goose retardant out in front of the recreation center.

Please feel free to email me or call with further questions, and thank you for you interest.

Lisa C. Green
Parks Supervisor

Lisa,
Thanks a lot for your answer. This being Boulder, the
choice between people harassing birds and birds
harassing people is not as obvious as it might seem to
an outsider. But it's good to know you're trying to
deal with this problem.
