After all, for large parts of the U.S. political spectrum, including virtually all Democrats, substantial numbers of independents, some Republicans, and a huge majority of American Jews, Trump is seen as beyond the pale, outside the bounds of normal political conduct. For Israel to embrace and exalt a leader with authoritarian tendencies who is viscerally offensive to so many core American supporters of Israel—who is seen to sully his office on a daily basis, to disregard truth with malice aforethought, to sympathize with white supremacists, to impugn the free press as the enemy of the people, to brag about assaulting women, to lack the simplest attributes of human decency and empathy, and to tear at the fabric of America’s civic and constitutional culture without a second thought—would be to ignore the indignation, disappointment, and raw anger this will provoke in wide swaths of the American public.

Whether this would create a lasting rift is hard to know, but it would be foolish to take that risk.

Пришлось несколько раз прочитать, чтоб понять. readable.io говорит, что Flesch-Kincaid скорбалл 20. Для сравнения у сегодняшней передовицы Нью-Йорк Таймс 16.

Интересно, это индикатор свой-чужой? Типа зацени, читатель, как я умею составлять сложноподчинённые предложения, безошибочно расставлять знаки препинания и использовать клёвые словечки вроде impugn, а ты можешь это прочитать, какие мы оба интеллигентные, приятно посмотреть.

Или как у Марка Твена, "I didn't have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead"?

I do agree with the author that naming the train station after Trump is in very poor taste. I really wish they don't go through with that.

Having said that, I disagree profoundly with the main premise of the article. Unfortunately, the Jews who are ardent detractors of Trump, en masse, do not tend to put support of Israel very high on their agenda. There was a recent survey of young secular American Jews, and a couple of things stuck out. I even found the article about it - https://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3446492,00.html:

The study found only 48% of US Jews under age 35 believe that Israel's destruction would be a personal tragedy for them, compared to 77% of those 65 and older.
In addition, only 54% of those under the age of 35 are "comfortable with the idea of a Jewish State" as opposed to 81% of those 65 and older.

In other words, unfortunately, alienating this segment will change absolutely nothing about Israel's prospects.
